The South African Students Congress (SASCO) has learnt with disappointment and anger of the actions by the Vice Chancellor and Exco Management of the University of South Africa (UNISA), who have decided to not only violate labour relations act but went as far as unfairly dismissing workers on the basis of their affiliation.

We have long warned that a Wolf can never hide in a sheep skin forever, Prof Nkambule and her management have exposed our long held views about her historic reactionary posture within the higher education sector over the years.

The tactics to silence workers and students through suspension and expulsion’s are nothing new to us. She must be aware that she joins a long list on intolerant incompetent fellows who are presiding over these public institutions who know no dialogue but Apartheid tactics. We are well aware of her planned attack on our Student Representative Councils and Branch Leaders because they speak against such injustices.

We are fully in support of the reinstatement of the leadership of our allies (NEHAWU) and full recognition of the National Union with immediate effect. SASCO officials will be meeting with the National Secretariat of NEHAWU and its structures on the ground to plot way forward from here moving forward, we will never accept suppression of democracy in our public institutions.

Our country has an ugly history of oppression and victimisation of those who speak the truth and nothing but the truth. We are duty bound to defend the primary stakeholders of the institution and further ensure that it continues to run smoothly and that it is a safe environment in all forms.
